Women’s Volleyball Loses in Three to USMMA

New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's volleyball team lost in three straight at home on Thursday evening as they Bloodhounds were defeated by the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA). John Jay lost by scores of 25-12, 26-24, 25-13. They are now 2-8 this season.

The Bloodhounds were led by Justyna Kopec with six kills, while Zadoora Carson had three kills in the contest. Andrea Medina had 12 digs in the contest, while Erica Lee had nine assists, six digs and four service aces.

The visiting Mariners stormed out to an early lead in the first set. With USMMA up 4-3 early on, the Mariners rallied off 11 straight points to distance themselves en route to the first set win.

John Jay led most of the second set. They were down 7-6 before scoring seven in a row to take a 13-7 advantage. The Bloodhounds led by six points on three occasions, most recently when they were up 19-13 capped by a service ace by Medina.

But USMMA crawled back and scored eight of the next 10 points to go up 22-21. John Jay scored the next three points to retake the lead 24-22, needing one more point. But USMMA scored the final four points to win 26-24.

In the third set, neither team had to serve a second time around as John Jay led 4-0, only for the Mariners to score the next eight and go up 8-4. The Bloodhounds tied the contest at 10-10, but never got the lead as USMMA rallied off another eight to go up 18-10 en route to finishing off the match.

John Jay is back in action on Sat. Sept. 26 for a quad match at Richard Stockton College starting with a match at 10 a.m.
