New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's basketball team was defeated at home on Monday as the Bloodhounds lost to Vassar College 65-52 in a non conference game at the Doghouse.
With the loss John Jay is now 0-13, while Vassar is 3-5.
The Bloodhounds were led by
Dominique Grice (North Babylon, NY)with a game-high 21 points, to go along with seven rebounds and five assists. Fellow teammates,
Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY, St. Barnabas) and
Chantelle Smith (Flushing, NY, Mary Louis Academy) added 12 each. Smith grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds in the contest as John Jay outrebounded the host Brewers 52-42 in the contest, including a 19-7 advantage on the offensive end.
Vassar's only lead of the first half was 2-0, before the host Bloodhounds took control of the game in the opening stanza.
John Jay led by as much as eight, and led by that amount with 9:18 to go on a pair of free throws by Grice to cap a 6-0 run.
The Bloodhounds led by eight on two more occasions, and were still up by that amount with 6:03 to go when Vassar College chipped away and cut into the lead.
Vassar outscored the Bloodhounds 11-4 over the next five minutes to get to within one and the Bloodhounds were up 28-27 with 1:10 to go and led by that score at halftime.
The Brewers scored the first nine points of the second half to take the lead and drew away. John Jay was held without a point over the first 6:12 of the second half, before a lay-up by Grice got the Bloodhounds to within six as they trailed 36-30 with 13:48 remaining.
But Vassar kept a marginable lead and took a double-digit advantage moments later and led 44-32 lead with 11:15 to go, capping an 8-2 spurt.
The Brewers led by as much as 16 in the second half and kept a double-digit lead over the final 7:04.
The Bloodhounds cut the lead down to 10 on several occasions in the closing moments before Vassar came away with the 13-point decision.
Vassar had three players score in double figures as
Brittany Parks led the Brewers with 18 points, while
Tori Chaltain and
Emily Haeuser had double-doubles. Chaltain had 14 points and 10 rebounds, Haeuser had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Both teams scored 22 points in the paint, while John Jay outscored Vassar 14-6 on second chance points.
John Jay returns to action on Wed. Jan. 13 for a home contest against conference foe Brooklyn College at 5 p.m.
