Men's Basketball Falls to Brooklyn College

New York, N.Y.— The John Jay men's basketball team went toe-to-toe with the defending City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) champions in a CUNYAC battle, but the Bloodhounds fell short as John Jay lost to the Brooklyn College Bulldogs 82-75 at the Doghouse.

With the loss John Jay is now 1-14 (1-4 CUNYAC), while Brooklyn is 8-5 (4-1 CUNYAC).

The Bloodhounds were led by Darryl Dennis (Valley Stream, NY, Valley Stream) with a game-high 22 points.

The host Bloodhounds and the visiting Bulldogs went nip and tuck the entire contest.

The lead changed eight times in the first half and there were four ties over the first twenty minutes. The game saw a total of 13 lead changes and six ties.

John Jay scored the first six points of the game to go up by a half dozen early. But the Bulldogs countered with the next seven and Brooklyn held a 7-6 advantage with 15:13 to go. Brooklyn led by as much as eight in the first half and led 16-8 with 12:56 to go.

But the Bloodhounds came right back with a 9-0 run and were up 17-16 with 10:53 remaining

John Jay led by as much as seven in the first half and were up 27-20 with 6:03 to go.

Brooklyn countered with an 8-0 run to go back up by a point. The game was tightly contested from there and John Jay held a 37-36 lead at halftime.

The game stayed hotly contested into the second half with neither team leading by more than three through the first eight minutes of the stanza.

Brooklyn used a 5-0 spurt to take a 48-48 tie and turn it into a 53-48 lead with 11:33 to go.

The Bloodhounds pulled to within one point of the lead two more times, but never held the lead.

The Bulldogs eventually increased their lead up to nine late in the second half and led 80-71 with 1:48 to go before the seven point win.

Brooklyn College, who shot 53.1 percent from the floor in the second half, was led by Richard Jean-Baptiste with 19 points (17 in the second half).

John Jay held a 30-20 advantage in points off the bench, while Brooklyn outscored the Bloodhounds 48-30 on points in the paint.

John Jay returns to action on Mon. Jan. 18 at York College at 4 p.m.
