Women's Basketball Loses to Conference Foe York in Non Conference Affair in Consolation Game

Washington, D.C.— The John Jay women's basketball team was defeated by fellow City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) foe York College 62-47 in a non conference affair in the consolation game of the Catholic University Tournament.

The Bloodhounds, who were playing a team called the Cardinals for the second day in a row, were led by Jessica Lirio (Bronx, NY, St. Barnabas) with 12 points, while fellow teammate Zadoora Carson (New York, NY, Urban Peace Academy) added 11 and grabbed a team-high 17 rebounds. Chantelle Smith (Flushing, NY, Mary Louis Academy) had seven points, 12 rebounds and seven steals for John Jay.

The Cardinals raced out to a 7-2 lead to start the game and led from start to finish.

York led by as much as 12 in the first half and were up by a dozen on two occasions, most recently at the 3:44 mark when the Cardinals led 31-19.

But John Jay hung around and stayed within striking range and closed out the first half on a 6-2 run to cut the deficit to eight as John Jay trailed 33-25 at halftime.

The Bloodhounds cut the deficit to six early in the second half as the Cardinals' lead was 37-31 with 13:22 to play after John Jay spurted off a 6-0 run.

But that was as close as the Bloodhounds would get. York went on a 13-5 run to take their biggest lead of the game at that moment, and the Cardinals led 50-36 with 8:24 to go.

York eventually led by as much as 20 in the second half and were up 60-40 with 4:17 to play.

John Jay scored the next seven points to get to within 13 with 1:46 to play before time expired.

The two teams combined to commit 85 turnovers as John Jay committed a season-high 48 turnovers (York committed 37).

York outscored John Jay 35-13 in points off turnovers and 40-20 on points in the paint. York was led by Kadisha Wickham with game-highs 22 points and 20 rebounds. 

John Jay returns to action on Wed. Jan. 6 at the City College of New York at 5 p.m.
