New York, N.Y.— The John Jay men's basketball team was defeated on the road as the Bloodhounds were defeated by the City College of New York (CCNY) 72-65 at Nat Holman Gymnasium.
With the loss, John Jay is now 1-12 (1-2 CUNYAC).
The Bloodhounds were led by
Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY, Alfred E. Smith) with game-highs 23 points and 12 rebounds, while
Daniel Desir (Jamaica, NY, Jamaica) had 12 points and nine rebounds.
The Bloodhounds fell behind big early on as the host Beavers opened the game on an 8-3 run to set the stage.
CCNY established a double-digit lead moments later and led 17-5 with 11:32 to play.
The Beavers led by as much 14 in the opening stanza and led by that margin twice, most recently when they held a 32-18 lead with 3:13 to play.
But the Bloodhounds used a big run at the end of the first half to get back into the game. They held CCNY scoreless over the final 3:13 and closed out the half on a 10-0 run to pull to within four as John Jay was down 32-28 at halftime.
The momentum continued into the second half for the Bloodhounds as they opened with a 5-0 run to cap a 15-0 overall run and take their first lead of the night. John Jay was up 37-32 with 17:25 to go after a lay-up by
Darryl Dennis (Valley Stream, NY, Valley Stream) who had nine points and five steals.
But CCNY countered with a 9-0 run and retook the lead and the Beavers led 41-37 with 14:16 left.
John Jay tied the contest at 41-41 to cap a mini 4-0 run. But CCNY countered with a 12-2 run to take a 10-point lead and the Beavers led 53-43 with 10:13 remaining.
The Bloodhounds pulled back to within as little as six and were down 56-50 after a dunk by Mason with 7:31 remaining. But CCNY kept the Bloodhounds at arms length distance the rest of the way.
The Beavers increased the lead to as much as 13 and they led 68-55 with 1:46 to go en route to a conference win.
CCNY held a 25-7 advantage in points off the bench.

Ben Washington with 14 points.
John Jay returns to action on Fri. Jan. 8 for a home contest against Baruch College at 7 p.m.
