Men's Basketball Loses Battle with Baruch

New York, N.Y.— The John Jay men's basketball team was defeated by Baruch College 72-64 at the Doghouse on Friday evening.

With the loss, John Jay is now 1-13 (1-3 CUNYAC), while Baruch is 11-1 (3-0 CUNYAC), winners of their last 10, as they upped their current conference regular season winning streak to 19 games, a streak that dates back to 2008.

The Bloodhounds were led by Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY, Alfred E. Smith) with 22 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Darryl Dennis (Valley Stream, NY, Valley Stream) chipped in with 18 points and six rebounds, while David Williams dished out six assists.

The Bloodhounds fought valiantly early on against the defending conference regular season champions, and after a back-and-forth pace to start the game, took a seven point lead with 8:50 to go. Dennis swished back-to-back three point field goals to cap an 8-0 run and John Jay led 23-16.

The Bloodhounds led the rest of the first half and were up by as much as nine. After Baruch had pulled to within three, John Jay spurted away with a 6-0 run. Mason knocked down a three point field goal, then Eddie Sanford (Alexandria, LA, Bossier) connected on a continuation three point play as John Jay led 33-24 with 3:47 to go.

The Bearcats, who were 24-for-36 from the free throw line in the contest, including 5-for-14 in the first half, went 2-for-4 from the line in the closing moments of the opening stanza to move to within seven points of the lead as John Jay was up 33-26 at halftime.

Baruch opened the second half on a game-changing 13-2 run to take a 39-35 lead with 12:50 to go, and the Bearcats never trailed again.

The Bloodhounds got back to within two with 10:49 to go on a lay-up by Mason to make the score 41-39, but Baruch spurted away with an 8-2 run to take a 49-41 lead.

The Bearcat lead fluctuated between five and eight points over the next several minutes. Then the Bloodhounds chipped away and cut the deficit to three points with 1:52 to play on a lay-up by Mason, who was fouled on the play, and John Jay was down 60-57. Mason failed to connect on the bonus, then Baruch then went on an 8-0 run over the next 1:20 to go up by 11, their biggest lead of the night.

The Bearcats connected on their last nine free throws in the final minute to preserve the win.

Baruch was led by Chris Beauchamp with 21 points, while Sean Loftus had 14 rebounds.

John Jay returns to action on Wed. Jan. 13 for a home contest against Brooklyn College at 7 p.m.
