Hamburg, N.Y.— After winning just one game during the entire 2009-10 season, the John Jay men's basketball team has already doubled its win total this season as the Bloodhounds improved to 2-0 on Friday with a 69-66 win over Keuka College in the opening round of the Hilbert College Tip-off tournament.
With the win, the Bloodhounds advance into the championship game on Saturday where they will play Morrisville State who defeated Hilbert 73-59 in the other game.
On Friday, the Bloodhounds were led by
Jerome Alexander with 22 points and eight assists, while
Jamar Harry added twenty points and 13 rebounds.
Isaiah Holman had 17 points while connecting on five three point field goals in the process.
Keuka was paced by Putter Brown with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Diamond Booker knocked in 15 points and had 14 rebounds.
The Storm led most of the first half and were up by as much as 10 in the opening stanza, and led by that amount with 4:39 to go as Keuka led 29-19. But John Jay closed out the first half on a 17-7 run to tie the score at 36-36 at halftime.
John Jay held the lead for most of the early stages of the second half. But Keuka battled back and took its first lead of the second stanza with 7:21 go on a continuation three pointer by Booker and the Storm led 56-55.
The Bloodhounds got the lead back with 4:30 to go and were up 61-60 on after a three point field goal by Holman.
Keuka got to within one point on several occasions, but clutch shooting by John Jay guided them to victory in the closing moments.
John Jay commited 12 turnovers to 20 for Keuka.
