New York, N.Y.— Playing in front of a large crowd for their first home and conference game of the season, the John Jay women's basketball team was victorious defeating Hunter College 60-56 on Homecoming Tuesday evening.
With the win, the Bloodhounds improve to 1-3 overall and 1-0 in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play. Hunter College is now 1-4 (0-1 CUNYAC).
John Jay had a huge performance by
Jamecia Forsythe who had a double-double of 12 points and a game-high 23 rebounds. Three other Bloodhounds, including
Dominique Grice,
Allana Beddoe and
Jessica Lirio also notched double-figures in scoring. Grice netted 16 in the win, while Beddoe knocked in 11 and Lirio 10.
Shamar Stewartson scored a game-high 35 point for Hunter, while Nicole Lenard had 11 rebounds.
The visiting Hawks took a big lead early in the game, scoring the first seven points of the contest. Hunter led by as much as 13 points in the first half and grabbed a 19-6 lead with 12:15 to go.
But John Jay came storming back. The Bloodhounds were down 10 (26-16) with 8:17 remaining before closing out the half outscoring the Hawks 16-8 over the final span to go into halftime down 34-32.
The Bloodhounds onslaught carried over into the second half as John Jay scored the first eight points and grabbed a 40-34 lead in the process to combine for a 24-8 run which included the end of the first half.
John Jay never trailed in the contest after that and led by nine on several occasions in the second stanza, most recently was with 7:05 to play on a three-point basket by Beddoe.
But Hunter stayed in the contest and pulled to within two point with twenty-four seconds to go on a Stewartson lay-up.
John Jay, however went 2-for-4 from the line in the closing seconds and played excellent defense to secure the win.
The Bloodhounds dominated the interior outscoring Hunter 30-12 on points in the paint.
Hunter was limited to zero points off the bench.
John Jay returns to action on Thu. Dec. 2 at the College of New Rochelle at 7 p.m.
