Newburgh, N.Y.— The College of Mount Saint Mary (CMSM) outrebounded the Bloodhounds 45-27 and outscored John Jay 29-15 on second chance points, and that proved to be the winning difference as the John Jay men's basketball team lost on the road at CMSM 93-77 on Saturday afternoon.
The Bloodhounds are now 5-4 overall this season, while the CMSM improved to 5-3 overall.
John Jay was led by
Jamar Harry with 26 points (on 12-for-17 shooting) and eight rebounds, while
Jerome Alexander added 17 points and a season-high 11 assists.
Isaiah Holman added 14 for the Bloodhounds.
The host Blue Knights were led by Carlos Valdez with 16 points and 13 (9 offensive) rebounds, while Joe Stabach added 16 off the bench as CMSM outscored John Jay 46-11 in points off the bench.
The lead changed four times in the first half and the opening stanza saw six ties. But the Blue Knights led for most of the first half.
CMSM led by as much as nine in the first half and led 32-23 with just over seven minutes to go.
But the Bloodhounds did not let the game get away and narrowed the lead to as little as two late in the first half before going into halftime down 44-39.
In the second half, the Blue Knights led throughout the twenty minutes. The Bloodhounds pulled to within two and trailed 46-44 early in the second half.
But CMSM pulled away quickly and established a double-digit lead moments later after three straight three pointers, including a pair of field goals followed by a continuation three point play.
John Jay managed to pull to within seven and were down 60-53 with 12:35 to play after a Holman three point field goal.
But the Blue Knights accelerated off a 7-0 run to go by fourteen, and the Bloodhounds never got to within single-digits again.
CMSM led by as much as twenty late in the second half to put the game out of reach.
John Jay returns to action on Mon. Dec. 13 for a home contest against Rutgers-Newark University at 6 p.m.
