Men's Basketball Falls at NJCU

Jersey City, N.J.— The John Jay men's basketball team was defeated on the road in a non conference game on Monday as the Bloodhounds were defeated by New Jersey City University (NJCU) 89-63.

John Jay is now 1-19 this season and the Bloodhounds current losing streak is now at 15 games.

John Jay was led by Vaughn Mason (Bronx, NY, Alfred E. Smith) with 14 points off the bench, while Daniel Desir (Jamaica, NY, Jamaica) and Darryl Dennis (Valley Stream, NY, Valley Stream) chipped in with 12 each for the Bloodhounds.

The Bloodhounds led early in the first half and were up by as much as three. John Jay led 15-12 with 11:57 to go on a three point field goal by Dennis.

But the host Gothic Knights made a sweeping 9-0 run to take a lead they would not relinquish and NJCU was ahead 21-15 with 10:11 to go.

John Jay closed the gap to as little as one, but never had the lead again.

With NJCU clinging on to a one point lead at 21-20 with 8:37 remaining, the Gothic Knights outscored John Jay 16-8 over the next five minutes to give NJCU its biggest lead of the night at that point and they led 37-27 with 3:46 to go.

The Gothic Knights then took their biggest lead of the half just before the intermission and NJCU was ahead by 11 at 41-30.

John Jay pulled to within eight points of the lead early in the second half, most recently with 18:22 to go. But that was as close as the Bloodhounds got in the stanza as NJCU spurted out a 5-0 run to go up by 13.

John Jay pulled to within 10 on several occasions, but never within. Up 52-42 with 14:49 remaining, NJCU went on a 14-3 run to go up by 21 and led 66-45.

The Gothic Knights kept the Bloodhounds at bay the rest of the contest.

John Jay pulled to within 15 with 4:35 to go and the Bloodhounds were down 78-63. But NJCU kept John Jay scoreless the rest of the way and closed out the game on an 11-0 run to take its biggest lead of the night of 26 just before the final buzzer.

NJCU was led by Kyle Ingram with 12 points in what was a balanced attack. No NJCU player played more than 19 minutes and 13 Gothic Knight players scored at least one point.

NJCU shot 53.6 percent (30-for-56) from the floor and held a 41-27 rebounding edge.

John Jay is back in action on Wed. Feb. 3 at Lehman College at 5 p.m.
