New York, N.Y.— After a shaky start, the John Jay women's volleyball team played valiantly, but the Bloodhounds were defeated losing 3-0 at home to New Jersey City University on Friday evening. John Jay lost 25-16, 25-17, 28-26.
With the loss, the Bloodhounds are now 1-10 this season, while NJCU is now 6-5 in 2010.
The visiting Gothic Knights capitalized on a sluggish Bloodhound start, rallying off seven of the first eight points of the match to take a 7-1 lead. The Bloodhounds dwindled the lead down to three and trailed 13-10, but NJCU rallied off seven in a row to take a 20-10 lead en route to the game one win.
In the second game, John Jay got first run on NJCU scoring the first four points to lead 4-0. The Gothic Knights started with three attack errors, before
Justyna Kopec (Nowa Deba, Poland, Franklin D. Roosevelt), who had a team-high nine kills for John Jay, recorded a kill to give the Bloodhounds a four point cushion.
John Jay was still leading 10-7, but the Gothic Knights quickly scored nine in a row to take a 16-10 lead and control of the match.
The Bloodhounds led most of the way in the third set and were up by as much as six and led 15-9 midway through the game.
John Jay clung to the lead, while NJCU chipped away and tied the score at 20-20. John Jay led 22-20, but the Gothic Knights did not go way. NJCU took a 24-23 lead and the two teams went back and forth to 26-26.
Both teams committed service errors before NJCU finally put the game away, the final blow was a kill by
Tabitha Jordan, who attacked 69 times and had a game-high 12 kills.
John Jay had a team-high 19 digs from Kopec, while
Martina Hot (Glendale, NY, Academy of American Studies) had four kills.
Rosmery Martinez (Santo Domingo, DR, James Madison)and
Rocio Chavira (Bronx, NY, Fashion Industries) had 15 digs each.
Brittany Erezuma had eight kills for NJCU, while
Michelle Rayo had 21 digs.
Alex Johanesen had 26 assists.
John Jay returns to action on Tue. Sept. 28 for a match against conference foe York College, 6 p.m. at the Doghouse.
