New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's volleyball team earned its first win at the Doghouse this season, and snapped a six-match losing streak in the process, as the Bloodhounds were victorious over York College 3-1 (25-14, 25-23, 13-25, 25-18) on Tuesday evening.
Martina Hot (Glendale, NY, Academy of American Studies) led the Bloodhounds with a .429 hitting percentage. She had a match-high 11 kills (two errors) on 26 attack attempts.
Meanwhile
Justyna Kopec (Nowa Deba, Poland, Franklin D. Roosevelt) and
Rosmery Martinez (Santo Domingo, DR, James Madison) had seven kills and eight digs each. The duo combined for 11 of John Jay's 16 service aces as Kopec had six and Martinez five.
After going back-and-forth for the first couple of points, the Bloodhounds took the lead for good in the first set by rallying off three in a row with the score tied 4-4 to take a 7-4 lead. Then with John Jay leading 12-10, the Bloodhounds raced off eight in a row to double-up York en route to a 1-0 match lead.
In the second set, York took the early advantage and led 6-3.
Down 8-6, the Bloodhounds went on a five point rally to take a 11-8 advantage. York kept the set close and tied it at 11-11. But John Jay scored five in a row to go up 16-11 for the moment. York though countered with five points of its own and reclaim the lead with was capped by a service ace by
Pamela Yap, who led York with six service aces.
But with the score tied 18-18, John Jay scored three in a row to take a lead it would not lose and lead 2-0 in the match.
With the score tied 7-7 in the third set, the visiting Cardinals rallied off three in a row to lead 10-7. Then with York up 13-10, the Cardinals scored four more in a row to lead 17-10. York outscored John Jay 8-3 the rest of the way to force a fourth set.
The Bloodhounds were up 10-9 in the fourth set before breaking it open with a 10-0 rally to put the match away.
York was led by
Maria Suero-Santos with nine kills, seven digs and three service aces. Miryam Candela had 21 assists and five digs.
John Jay is back in action on Sat. Oct. 2 for a tri-match at Kean University starting at 12 p.m.
