Men’s Basketball Cruises to Victory over CCNY

New York, N.Y.— The John Jay men's basketball team snapped a six-game losing streak and earned its first conference win in the process as the Bloodhounds handily defeated the City College of New York 79-56 at the Doghouse on Wednesday evening.

The win improves John Jay to 6-9 (1-3 CUNYAC), while CCNY is now 2-12 (0-4 CUNYAC) and losers of twelve in a row after starting the season 2-0.

The Bloodhounds were led by Jerome Alexander with 22 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, while Jamar Harry picked up his team leading eighth double-double of the season with 20 points, 13 rebounds and four steals. Fellow teammates Isaiah Holman and Matt Collins had 12 points each, while Collins picked up a game-high five steals.

CCNY was led by Vincent Roberts with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Brendan Barile scored 11 off the bench.

The Bloodhounds led most of the contest. CCNY led for the first couple of minutes, but John Jay took control of the contest midway through the first half. With the score tied at 15-15, the Bloodhounds went on a 7-0 run to take the lead for good. A three-point field goal by Alexander capped the run with 5:38 to play.

John Jay led by as much as 10 in the first half and led by that amount in the final minute of play after a pair of Alexander free throws. But CCNY connected on a three point field goal just before the buzzer to pull the Beavers to within seven as John Jay led 30-23 at halftime.

The Bloodhounds held CCNY scoreless through the first five plus minutes of the second half, and outscored the Beavers 14-0 in the process as John Jay took a 44-23 lead with 14:33 to play.

John Jay's second half lead was never cut severely into.

CCNY pulled to within as little as twelve midway through the second half and were down 53-41 with 10:34 to play. But John Jay raced off a 10-0 run to go back up by more than twenty.

The Bloodhounds led by as much as twenty-eight in the latter stages before walking off with the win.

John Jay dominated the inside, outscoring CCNY 46-20 on points in the paint.

John Jay is back in action on Fri. Jan. 14 for a home contest against the New York City Tech at 7 p.m.
