Balanced Attack Leads Women’s Basketball to Win over CCNY

New York, N.Y.— Five members of the John Jay women's basketball team scored in double-figures as the Bloodhounds, behind a strong team effort, picked up an impressive win in a 77-60 victory over the City College of New York at the Doghouse on Wednesday evening.

Jessica Lirio led the way with 19 points in the win, while Elizabeth Newton and Danielle Moses came off the bench and scored 16 and 13 respectively. Allana Beddoe added 10 and Jamecia Forsythe scored 10 in the win.

Dominique Grice added a season-high nine assists, while Lirio added eight for John Jay. Forsythe had her fifth double-double of the season, and her third in a row with a team-high 14 rebounds.

CCNY was led by Donika Rexhepi with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Syreeta Williams netted 18 for the Beavers.

The Bloodhounds led most of the contest. They scored the first eight points of the game and led 8-0 early on. But the Beavers came back and kept the game close. After falling behind by eight, they scored the next eight points to tie the game with just under five minutes gone by.

John Jay took several brief leads, but the Beavers tied each time. CCNY took a very brief lead with seven minutes gone by and led 14-12.

CCNY led once more at 15-14 with 11:36 to play before John Jay went on a 7-0 run to take a 21-15 lead with 8:30 to go.

The Bloodhounds never trailed again and gradually increased the lead and led by as much as 14 with 1:29 to go before going into halftime with a 39-30 lead.

CCNY quickly cut into the John Jay lead and managed to pull to within one after the Beavers opened the stanza on a 12-4 run to make the score 43-42 John Jay with 16:29 to go.

But the Bloodhounds countered the run and outscored CCNY 21-6 over the next six plus minutes to take a 64-48 lead.

Moments later the Bloodhounds led by as much as 23 and took a 73-50 advantage with 5:46 to play.

CCNY carved into the gap late and pulled to within 13 with 1:41 to go, but the Bloodhounds maintained a sizable lead and improved to 2-2 in conference play this season.

The Bloodhounds outrebounded the Beavers 52-39 overall and held a 40-26 advantage on points in the bench. Behind strong efforts by Newton and Moses off the bench, the Bloodhounds outscored CCNY, who only played six players, 30-4 in points off the bench.

John Jay returns to action on Fri. Jan. 14 for a home contest against New York City Tech at 5 p.m.
