New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's basketball team picked up its second win in as many games, and improved to 3-2 in City University of New York Athletic Conference play as the Bloodhounds defeated the New York City College of Technology (NYCCT) 70-60 at the Doghouse on Friday evening.
With the win, the Bloodhounds improve their overall record to 5-9, while their 3-2 conference mark marks the first time John Jay women's basketball has been over .500 in CUNYAC play five games into the conference season since the 2006-07 campaign.
John Jay was led by
Allana Beddoe who scored all of her season-high 20 points in the second half. She also had a team co-high four steals in the victory. Meanwhile teammate
Jessica Lirio added 17 points and six assists, while
Dominique Grice had 13 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
Jamecia Forsythe added 11 points and 12 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season.
The Bloodhounds trailed early in the contest. NYCCT scored the first five points of the contest and led by as much as nine in the opening stages. The visiting Yellow Jackets were up 16-7 with 12:40 to go before the Bloodhounds carved into the lead. From that moment, John Jay went on a 13-2 run to take a 20-18 lead with 7:37 to play.
Neither team could muster up much offense over the final seven and a half minutes. But NYCCT managed to outscore John Jay 7-2 over that stretch to retake the lead and go into halftime up 25-22.
The Yellow Jackets stubbornly held onto the lead through the first six plus minutes of the second half. NYCCT never led by more than five during that time as the Bloodhounds stayed within striking range.
The Bloodhounds tied the contest at 35-35 after a pair of free throws by Lirio, but the Yellow Jackets quickly raced off six in a row to go up by a half dozen.
John Jay trailed 45-39 with 8:34 remaining before Beddoe got hot. She knocked down back-to-back three point field goals to tie the score. Then Forsythe put home a jumper in the paint with 7:13 to go to give John Jay its first lead of the second half.
Christine Jackson from NYCCT, who scored a game-high 35 points, scored a lay-up to tie the game. But John Jay then took control from there.
Beddoe scored the game's next seven points, before Grice and Lirio combined to score the next four to cap the Bloodhounds 11-0 run and go up 58-47 with 4:34 to play.
John Jay increased its lead to fourteen and led 64-50 with 2:09 to play.
The Yellow Jackets pulled to within six with 1:24 to go on a Jackson three point field goal. But clutch shooting down the stretch by John Jay prevented any City Tech comeback.
Jackson also had a game-high six steals, while Erica Simon had a game-high 15 rebounds and five steals.
The Yellow Jackets held a 34-24 advantage on points in the paint.
John Jay held a 51-42 edge on rebounding as Elizabeth Newtown contributed 11 off the bench.
John Jay returns to action on Wed. Jan. 19 for a home contest against York College at 5 p.m.
