Men’s Basketball Falls at Home to York

New York, N.Y.— The John Jay men's basketball team was outrebounded 72-33, and outscored 23-6 on second chance points, and saw its two game winning streak snapped in the process as the Bloodhounds were defeated by York College 69-49 at the Doghouse on Wednesday evening.

The loss leaves John Jay at 7-10 (2-4 CUNYAC) this season, while York improves to 4-12 (2-3 CUNYAC) on the year.

John Jay had a solid performance by Jerome Alexander with 21 points on 9-for-18 shooting, while Isaiah Holman and newcomer Irving Abbott had eight points each.

York College was led by Marcel Esonwune with 21 points and a game-high 27 rebounds. Meanwhile William Holley added 15 points and nine boards, while Kevin Lausell had 10 rebounds in the contest.

John Jay led very briefly in the opening minute, but York had control and a sizable lead throughout the contest.

The Cardinals led by as much as 18 in the first half and led 40-22 with 1:22 remaining before going into halftime leading 40-25.

York led by double-digits the entire second half. The Bloodhounds got to within 10 points with 8:13 to go on an Alexander jumper with capped a 10-4 run that made the score 56-46.

But the Cardinals quickly went on an 8-1 run to take another large lead, and outscored John Jay 13-3 over the final 8:13 to preserve the win.

York outscored John Jay 42-28 on points in the paint.

The Cardinals held a 31-11 advantage on offensive rebounds.

John Jay returns to action on Friday January 21 for a home game against the College of Staten Island at 7 p.m.
