New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's basketball team picked up its third consecutive win overall and in conference, and ended York's unbeaten CUNYAC record in the process, as the Bloodhounds defeated the Cardinals, 74-69 at the Doghouse on Wednesday evening.
The win improved the Bloodhounds to 6-9 overall this season, and their three game winning streak is the first for John Jay since the 2006-07 season. York College falls to 7-8 (4-1 CUNYAC) this season.
John Jay was led by
Dominique Grice who had her fourth double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds to go along with six assists. Meanwhile
Jamecia Forsythe chipped in with 18 points and 17 boards.
Jessica Lirio added 15 points (892 for her career) and six assists.
York College was led by Shadae Rice with a game-high 26 points, while Maimouna Dabo had 14 points and six assists.
The Bloodhounds dominated the inside, outscoring the Cardinals 44-28 on points in the paint and held a 22-14 advantage on second chance points.
John Jay led the entire second half and the latter portion of the first half. York led by as much as six early on and had an 11-5 lead less than five minutes gone by.
The Bloodhounds took the lead for good with 6:43 to go in the first half on a lay-up by
Elizabeth Newton (6 pts, 11 rbs) that gave John Jay a 21-20 lead at that moment. That field goal started an 8-0 run that put the Bloodhounds up 27-20 with 5:52 to go.
Allana Beddoe (8 pts, 7 rbs) connected on a three point field goal to cap the run.
John Jay extended the lead to as much as 12 moments later and led 36-23 on another Newton lay-up that gave the Bloodhounds a 35-23 advantage.
York scored the final four points of the first half as John Jay led 35-27 at halftime.
John Jay had a sizable lead through most of the second half. The Bloodhounds led by as much as 13 in the second half on three occasions, most recently when they led 65-52 with 3:38 to play.
But York gave the Bloodhounds a cause for concern in the waning moments. Still down by double-digits at 69-59 with 2:06 to play, the Cardinals scampered off a quick 7-0 run and pulled to within three taking just fifty-eight seconds off the clock in the process.
But a clutch basket by
Chantelle Smith with fifty-three seconds left made it a two possession game and the Bloodhounds made critical defensive stops to preserve the win.
John Jay shot 39.5 percent (30-for-76) in the win and held a 56-45 rebounding edge.
John Jay is back in action on Friday January 21 for a home contest against the College of Staten Island at 5 p.m.
