Men’s Basketball Rolls over William Paterson

New York, N.Y.— The John Jay men's basketball team shot 51.8 percent (29-for-56) from the field, including 53.8 percent (14-for-26) in the second half and dominated throughout as the Bloodhounds snapped a four game skid with a 73-60 win over William Paterson University at the Doghouse on Monday evening.

With the win, the Bloodhounds are now 8-13 this season, while William Paterson falls to 12-8.

John Jay was led by Jerome Alexander with 22 points, while Isaiah Holman had 18, including five three point field goals. Matt Collins added 11 and Jamar Harry added 10 off the bench in the victory.

The Bloodhounds played a great overall team effort and got a fantastic effort from Justin Alleyne who had a game-high eight assists to go along with seven points and five rebounds.

William Paterson was led by Gabriel Paul with 14 points, while teammate Nick Allan added 12.

The Bloodhounds led just about the entire way. The visiting Pioneers led by as much as four in the early stages of the contest and had a 14-10 lead before John Jay went to work and took control of the contest.

Down 14-10, the spirited Bloodhounds used an 8-0 run to take an 18-14 lead midway through the first half.

William Paterson never held a lead again. The Pioneers tied the game on two more occasions with the most recent tie coming with 4:17 to go and the score knotted at 24-24.

But the Bloodhounds thrusted forward with an 11-4 spurt over the final four minutes to take a seven point at halftime as John Jay was up 35-28.

In the second half, the Bloodhounds put on a tour be force over the Pioneers, who had defeated John Jay by double figure margins the past four seasons, including 86-45 last season, 61-45 in 2008-09, 69-58 in 2007-08 and 77-45 in 2006-07. John Jay's last win over William Paterson was a 67-60 win during the 2003-04 season.

The Bloodhounds started the second stanza on a 19-4 run to take a twenty-two point lead at 54-32 with 13:36 to play.

William Paterson dipped into the lead momentarily behind a 10-1 run to make the score 55-42 with eleven minutes remaining.

But the Bloodhounds got a huge four point bucket by Holman on the ensuing possession who was fouled in the act as he buried a three point field goal from the corner.

Holman's four point basket ignited a 15-4 run that gave John Jay a 70-46 lead with 6:43 to play and virtually put the game out of reach.

Holman knocked down another three point field goal with 5:35 to go that put John Jay up 73-51 at that point.

William Paterson held the Bloodhounds scoreless over the final five and a half minutes and closed out the game on a 9-0 spurt to pull to within thirteen points before the final buzzer. But the game was well in hand as John Jay as the Bloodhounds closed out their 2010-11 non conference games with a 6-6 record this season.

John Jay is back in action on Wednesday February 2 for a game at Hunter College at 7 p.m.
