New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's volleyball team lost 3-1 (25-17, 15-25, 12-25, 12-25) to the United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) at the Doghouse on Thursday evening.
With the loss, John Jay falls to 0-17 on the season, while USMMA improves to 8-12 overall.
The Bloodhounds were led by
Martina Hot with eight kills and to go along with nine digs. Meanwhile
Renauta Sailsman added four kills and team-highs 14 digs and four service aces.
Katherine Bonilla had 16 assists and three service aces.
USMMA was led by Cassandra Palmer with 15 kills and seven digs, while libero Michelle Danhof chimed in with match-highs 20 digs and nine service aces.
The opening set win by John Jay was the second set the Bloodhounds won this season, and it snapped a 42-set losing streak dating back to a first set win against the College of Staten Island on Sept. 10. In that opening set, the Bloodhounds rallied off three straight points to break a 15-15 tie to go up 18-15. John Jay closed out the set by scoring the last four points to secure the win.
In the second set, the Bloodhounds led early 5-1. But trailing 6-5, the visiting Mariners, behind the servicing of Danhof, rallied off nine in a row to go up 14-6 en route to evening the sets.
USMMA led from start to finish in the third set to take a 2-1 advantage, before winning the fourth to ice the contest.
