Men's Basketball Defeats Montclair State to Win Tip-off Tournament

Farmingdale, N.Y.— The John Jay men's basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season, and for the second year in a row are champions of a tip-off tournament as the Bloodhounds defeated Montclair State 89-79 in the championship game of the Courtyard by Marriott tip-off tournament at Farmingdale State University.
 
The Bloodhounds were led by Jerome Alexander with 27 points to go along with five rebounds and six assists. He was named the tournament Most Valuable Player after averaging 24.5 points per game over the two day affair. Fellow teammate Matt Collins added 21 points and was named to the All Tournament Team. John Jay also had a double-digit scoring effort from Isaiah Holman with 13 points.
 
The Bloodhounds outscored the Red Hawks 46-38 on points in the paint and held a 23-12 edge on points off turnovers. John Jay shot 17-for-18 from the free throw line (94.4 percent).
 
Montclair State was led by Ordel Goldson with 23 points off the bench along with eight rebounds. Andrew August had 20 points, 11 rebounds and six assists for the Red Hawks.
 
John Jay led most of the first half, and while holding a 17-3 edge in points off turnovers , went into halftime leading 50-36.
 
The Bloodhounds led by as much 21 points in the second half. Montclair pulled to within as little as seven in the final minute, but the Bloodhounds connected on all six free throws in the final minute to preserve the win.
 
John Jay is back in action on Saturday November 26 for a game at St. Joseph's-Brooklyn at 5 p.m.
