New York, N.Y.— The John Jay women's basketball team opened its 2011-12 home portion of its schedule in winning fashion on Monday evening as the Bloodhounds defeated the College of New Rochelle, 70-56 in a non conference affair at the Doghouse.
The win improves John Jay to 1-2 overall on the young season, while the College of New Rochelle (CNR) falls to 1-2 overall this year.
John Jay was paced by
Elizabeth Newton with a double-double of 22 points and 14 rebounds. Meanwhile
Aneska Tejada shot 8-for-13 and had 16 points and six rebounds off the bench.
Allana Beddoe had 11 points in the win.
CNR was led by their point guard Alyssa Pechin with 22 points, four assists and six steals, several of were ripped from her opponent's possession. Meanwhile Holly Cammarota had a double-double of 11 points and 11 rebounds.
The Bloodhounds never trailed in the contest. John Jay scored the first four points in the contest to go up 4-0. The visiting Blue Angels tied the score momentarily and the score was 6-6 with 11:11 to go.
John Jay then quickly scored five unanswered to take an 11-6 lead. The Bloodhounds never trailed in the contest and maintained a nice lead through the rest of the first half. John Jay pulled ahead by 10 and were up 29-19 in the final minute of play before going into halftime up eight at 29-21.
Newtown, who played the entire second half after only playing nine in the first half because of foul trouble, had a big final stanza. She had 18 points and nine rebounds over the final twenty minutes of the game to help the Bloodhounds edge away.
Early in the second half, CNR managed to dwindle the lead down to five by opening the half on a 5-0 run to make the score 29-26. But Newton scored 11 of the team's first 14 points in the second half in the midst of a 14-3 run that put the Bloodhounds ahead 43-29 with 12:44 to go.
Moments later, John Jay started another spurt and took a 20 point lead and the Bloodhounds led 55-35 with 8:03 left.
The Blue Angels did not go away and cut the lead in half, and behind an 11-1 run, CNR took a 59-39 deficit and trimmed it to a 60-50 deficit with 3:52 to play.
But that was as close as CNR would get as the Bloodhounds put the clamps on the Blue Angels the rest of the way to secure the win.
John Jay held a 38-20 advantage on points in the paint and held a 22-6 advantage on points off the bench.
CNR held a 27-20 advantage in points off turnovers.
John Jay's next game is Tuesday November 29 against conference foe Hunter College in John Jay's annual homecoming. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m.
