New York, N.Y.— Having to shake off the rust after a two and a half week lay-off, the John Jay men's basketball team returned to action and defeated Yeshiva University 74-61 at the Doghouse on Tuesday evening.
The win improves to the Bloodhounds to 6-4 overall this season. Yeshiva falls to 2-12 on the season.
The Bloodhounds were led by
Jerome Alexander with a game-high 28 points on 9-for-17 shooting. He also contributed a team-high four assists in the victory. Meanwhile fellow teammates
Isaiah Holman and
Jamar Harry reached double figures in scoring as Holman netted 11 and Harry had 10.
Swindon Charles had a game-high 12 rebounds in the contest.
Yeshiva was led by Gil Bash with 21 points on 7-for-12 shooting to go along with six rebounds and three assists. He was the only player to score in double figures for the Macabees. Dovie Hoffman had 10 rebounds and eight points in the loss.
John Jay led practically throughout the contest. The Bloodhounds led by as much as 15 in the opening stanza and were up 30-15 with just over five minutes to go.
But the Macabees stayed within striking range in the first half and pulled to within seven and were down 34-27 in the final minute of the opening half. A jumper by Holman at the buzzer put the Bloodhounds back up by nine as John Jay went into halftime up 36-27.
Yeshiva fought all the way back early in the second half. The Macabees opened the second half on a 13-4 run to tie the score at 40-40 with 14:46 to go.
But the Bloodhounds responded with a 10-0 run to go ahead 50-40 moments later as John Jay led the rest of the way.
Yeshiva scored the next four points to make the score 50-44 before the Bloodhounds answered with a 6-0 run to go back up by double figures.
John Jay maintained the double-digit lead the rest of the contest en route to the Bloodhounds' sixth win of the season.
John Jay led by as much as 17 in the second half and led 74-57 with just under two minutes to go before cruising the rest of the way.
John Jay held a 44-32 advantage on points in the paint and 24-12 on points off turnovers. Yeshiva committed 18 turnovers to 11 for the Bloodhounds.
