Hampden-Sydney, Va.— The John Jay men's basketball team was outrebounded by twenty (56-36) and allowed its opponent to shoot 61.8 percent from the field (42-for-68) as the Bloodhounds suffered its worst defeat of the season as they lost to Hampden-Sydney College 110-65 in the championship game of the 2011 Bojangles Christmas Classic at Hampden-Sydney College.
The loss leaves the Bloodhounds at 7-5 on the season, while Hampden-Sydney is now 8-2.
John Jay was led by
Jamar Harry with a career-high 34 points, 11 rebounds and six steals. He was named to the All-Tournament Team in the process. Fellow teammate
Isaiah Holman added 15 points in the loss. Hampden-Sydney was led by Khobi Williamson and Harrison George with 20 points and nine rebounds each in the contest.
The hot shooting by the host Tigers allowed them to develop a big lead early in the contest and obtain control of the game. Hampden-Sydney established a double-digit lead less than five minutes into the contest and was up 17-6 with 4:57 gone by.
The Tigers continued to increase the lead in the first half and never led by less than double-digits the rest of the way. Hampden-Sydney led by as much as 27 late in the first half before going into halftime ahead by 24 with a 52-28 advantage.
Hampden-Sydney upped the lead to 30 and was ahead 67-37 with 16:15 remaining in the game. The Tigers then led by thirty-plus points over the final sixteen plus minutes of the game en route to the win.
While the hosts had the hot hand, the Bloodhounds struggled. John Jay connected on 31.9 percent (23-for-72) of their field goal attempts. Despite being outrebounded by 20, John Jay held a 22-17 advantage on the offensive end.
Hampden-Sydney held a 68-36 advantage on points in the paint and a 42-7 advantage on bench scoring.
John Jay returns to action on Wednesday January 4 against conference foe Baruch College at the Doghouse at 7 p.m.
