New York, N.Y.— After a 10 win season, including a 7-6 record in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play, the John Jay women's basketball team will play York College on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.in the quarterfinal round of the 2010-11 Con Edison / CUNYAC women's basketball championship.
The Bloodhounds earned the No. 4 seed for the eight team championship, while York has locked in the No. 5 spot. The day will mark a history making date as it marks the first time the Bloodhounds will host a playoff game inside the confines of 899 Tenth Avenue.
John Jay is making an appearance in post season play for the first time since the 2006-07 season where the Bloodhounds finished third place in CUNYAC. The conference championship quarterfinal round was played on the championship site prior to three years ago, hence making this the first time the Bloodhounds will utilize the Doghouse for a playoff game.
A win over York College during conference regular season play helped lift the Bloodhounds to the No. 4 seed as the Bloodhounds' first round opponent finished with an identical record in league play.
John Jay has merited wins over Hunter College twice and picked up victories against College of Staten Island, Medgar Evers College, New York City Tech and the City College of New York to earn the high seed.
During this season, the Bloodhounds have been led by their four year senior duo of
Dominique Grice and
Jessica Lirio, both of whom were named CUNYAC second team All-Stars this past season.
Grice has moved into second on the John Jay all-time annals in scoring, needing just 10 to reach 1500 in her career. This season, Grice has averaged 14.2 points per game and is amongst the nation's leaders in steals averaging 4.0 per contest. Her 4.8 assists per game also leads the Bloodhounds.
Lirio, the other four year senior, recently became the fifth John Jay women's basketball player to reach 1,000 career points. This season she leads the team and ranks second in CUNYAC in scoring at 18.9 points per game.
Another player to watch includes freshman sensation
Jamecia Forsythe. Forsythe is averaging a double-double of 11.1 points and 12.0 rebounds per game.
