Staten Island, N.Y.— The John Jay men's basketball season came to an end on Sunday afternoon as the Bloodhounds were defeated by the College of Staten Island 93-83 in the opening round of the 2010-11 Con Edison / City University of New York Athletic Conference men's basketball championship at the CSI Sports and Recreation Center.
With the loss, the No. 8 seeded Bloodhounds' season ends with a 9-17 overall record. The top seeded CSI advances into the semifinal round on Wednesday to play No. 4 Brooklyn College who were an 80-69 winner over No. 5 York College.
The Bloodhounds had four players score in double figures and were led by
Jamar Harry with 20, followed by
Jerome Alexander with 19.
Isaiah Holman had 17 and
Kevin Philius came off the bench with 10.
The Dolphins were led by T.J. Tibbs with 29 points, while Jordan Young had a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds. Dale Taranto had 15 and Bloochy Magliore had 12 for CSI.
Both teams shot above par as the Bloodhounds connected on 50 percent (35-for-70), including 57.9 percent (22-for-38) in the second half. CSI shot just under 61 percent (28-for-46), which included 62.5 percent in the first half and 59.1 in the second half.
Despite making seven more fields in the contest, the Bloodhounds went to the free throw line 13 times (and made just six), while CSI connected on 30 of 40 from the charity stripe.
The first half saw the lead change several times and neither team led by more than one possession through the first nine plus minutes of the stanza.
The Dolphins though took control the second portion of the first half. Down 15-14, CSI went on a 13-0 run to take a commanding 30-17 lead with 6:06 to play. Less than a minute later, the Dolphins extended the lead to 15 and were up 34-19.
But John Jay made progress and slithered into the Dolphin lead. The Bloodhounds scored the next seven points to cut the lead to eight and John Jay was down 34-26 with 2:50 to play.
But CSI closed out the first half by outscoring John Jay 12-4 to take its biggest lead of the half as the Dolphins went into halftime up 46-30.
The Bloodhounds played catch up the entire second half, but could not get over the hump. John Jay never got its deficit to under 10 in the second half.
The Bloodhounds opened the second half on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to 46-36 with 18:15 to play.
But the Dolphins countered with an 11-2 spurt to take a 19 point lead and the Dolphins led 57-38 with 14:20 to play.
The Dolphins held a comfortable lead just about the rest of the way. CSI upped its advantage to 21 with 5:31 to play and lead score 74-53.
Despite the large late deficit, the Bloodhounds played to the final second. Still down by 19 with 1:14 to play, John Jay scratched out an 8-2 run to pull to within 13 at 84-71 with thirty seconds remaining.
John Jay edged a little closer a moment later and trailed 89-79 with under twenty seconds remaining.
But clutch free throw shooting down the stretch by CSI prevented any catastrophic comeback as the Dolphins secured the 10 point win.
