New York, N.Y.— The John Jay men's basketball team picked up a critical win on Saturday to maintain the inside track to a playoff berth in the process as the Bloodhounds downed the City College of New York (CCNY) 68-60 at Nat Holman Gymnasium.

With the win, the Bloodhounds improved to 9-14 (3-8 CUNYAC).

John Jay was led by Jerome Alexander with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Jamar Harry had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

CCNY was led by Israel Vickers with 15 points.

The Bloodhounds led virtually the entire contest en route to victory. John Jay took the lead for good when it took a 5-4 lead in the opening stages.

John Jay went on a 10-2 run to take a 12-6 lead with 12:53 to go. The Bloodhounds led by as much as eleven points in the first half and led 31-20 at halftime.

The Bloodhounds led by as much as twelve early in the second half. But the host Beavers rallied back and got back into the contest.

After falling behind 42-30, CCNY outscored John Jay 17-6 over the next eight minutes to pull to within a point and the Beavers trailed the Bloodhounds by just one point (48-47) with six minutes remaining.

But the Bloodhounds connected on three straight three-point field goals, including two by Alexander and another by Isaiah Holman (9 pts) to put John Jay back up by double digits and the Bloodhounds led 57-47 with 4:37 to go.

CCNY pulled to within as little as five in the final minute, but the Bloodhounds kept the Beavers at arms length distance the rest of the way.

John Jay held a 43-40 edge in rebounding, while CCNY held a 24-18 advantage on points in the paint.

John Jay is back in action on Thu. Feb. 10 at Baruch College at 7:30 p.m.
