New York, N.Y.—The John Jay women's basketball team lost to Brooklyn College, 59-41, in a conference match-up at the Doghouse on Wednesday evening.
With the loss, John Jay fell to 5-11 (2-6 CUNYAC) this season, while Brooklyn upped its record to 14-5 (7-0 CUNYAC).
Freshman forward
Tyana Hale netted almost half of the Bloodhounds' points in the contest and led all scorers with 20. She was the lone Bloodhound to notch double figures.
Jamecia Forsythe added seven points to go along with nine rebounds and three blocks.
Brooklyn was led by Charnelle St. Laurent with 17 points, while fellow teammate Justine O'Callahan added 11 points for the Bulldogs.
The low scoring affair started out as such. The Bloodhounds scored the first five points of the game to lead 5-0. Brooklyn failed to connect on its first eight shots before finally scoring their first points of the game almost five minutes in on a jumper by Lauren Plagainos.
The field goal by Plagainos ignited a 7-0 Bulldogs run that gave Brooklyn a 7-5 lead with 14:38 to go.
Brooklyn went on to lead the rest of the way. Despite holding the lead over the final thirty-four plus minutes of the contest, the Bloodhounds hung in there most of the first half. A lay-up by
Aneska Tejada with 5:21 remaining got John Jay to within three as the Bloodhounds trailed 20-17.
But John Jay went scoreless the rest of the way, while Brooklyn closed out the first half on an 11-0 run to take its biggest lead of the half as the Bulldogs went into halftime up 31-17.
Brooklyn opened the second half on a 6-0 spurt to extend the overall run to 17-0. The run put the Bulldogs ahead by 20 as they led 37-17.
Brooklyn gradually distanced itself in the second half and led by as much as twenty-nine in the final stanza. The Bulldogs led 58-29 with 5:55 to go. But the Bloodhounds played hard to the end, and outscored their opponent 12-1 over the final five plus minutes before the final buzzer.
Brooklyn held a 26-16 edge on points in the paint and held a 49-43 rebounding edge in the game. The Bulldogs shot 32.8 percent (22-for-67) in the game, but grabbed 19 offensive rebounds which led to 11 second chance points.
Brooklyn also held a 14-6 advantage on points off turnovers.
John Jay returns to action on Friday, January 27 for a home contest against Medgar Evers College at 5 p.m.
