New York, N.Y.— Down three at halftime, Medgar Evers College opened the second half on a 15-1 run to take the lead and control of the game and outscored the Bloodhounds 53-30 in the final stanza as the John Jay men's basketball team lost to Medgar Evers College 83-63 at the Doghouse on Friday evening.
The loss, leaves John Jay at 8-12 (1-7 CUNYAC) this season, while Medgar Evers is now 13-8 (4-4 CUNYAC) overall.
The Bloodhounds were led in scoring by
Jerome Alexander with 25 points, leaving him just two points shy of 1,000 for his career. He added a team-high five assists in the contest. Meanwhile
Jamar Harry had a double-double of 17 points and 13 rebounds, while
Isaiah Holman added 14 points for John Jay.
Medgar Evers was led by Winston Douglas with a double-double of 25 points and 21 rebounds, while Brian Johnson had a double-double as well with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Jovan Deare had 18 points, including 12-for-12 from the free throw line as the Cougars went 32-for-35 (91.4 percent) from the charity stripe.
The visiting Cougars took the initial lead and led by as much as 12 in the first half by opening the game on an 18-6 run.
But the Bloodhounds came roaring back and took control of the game. John Jay outscored Medgar Evers 18-2 over the next four and a half minutes to take a 24-20 lead with just under eight minutes to go.
John Jay led by as much as five and led 33-28 with 3:49 to go. The Cougars connected on a pair of free throws with 3:18 remaining to make the score 33-30. After neither team score over the final three plus minutes, John Jay went into halftime ahead by that score.
But Medgar Evers' big run to open the final stanza gave the Cougars the momentum and they never relinquished the lead once they got it. The 15-1 run to open the second half gave Medgar Evers a 45-34 lead with 14:41 to play.
John Jay quickly answered with a 5-0 spurt to cut the lead to six. But that was as close as John Jay would get the rest of the way.
The Cougars managed to keep the Bloodhounds at arm's-length distance midway through the second half.
But up 61-51 with 5:55 to play, Medgar Evers outscored the Bloodhounds 18-6 over the next five minutes to go up by 22 with just over a minute to play as the Cougars grabbed a 79-57 lead en route to the win.
In addition to making the most of their free throw attempts, Medgar Evers outrebounded the Bloodhounds 55-27, including 32-11 in the second half, helping the Cougars to a 20-5 advantage on second chance points.
John Jay limited themselves to 11 turnovers, while Medgar Evers committed 21. John Jay held a 23-17 advantage on points off turnovers.
