New York, N.Y.—Playing in front of a large spirited crowd for their opponent's annual signature event, the John Jay women's basketball team was defeated by Baruch College 88-53 at Baruch's ARC Arena for their annual Battle of Lexington on Thursday night.
The Bloodhounds were led by
Tyana Hale with 12 points, while
Aneska Tejada came off the bench and added 10 points.
Jamecia Forsythe came just shy of a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
The host Bearcats were led by Francess Henry off the bench with 16 points, while teammate Sheridan Taylor also came off the bench and recorded a double-double of 15 points and 13 rebounds. Overall Baruch outscored John Jay 48-17 on points off the bench.
The Bloodhounds kept the game close with the defending conference champions through the early stages of the contest. The game started out as a run and gun affair, and the Bloodhounds took the match right to the Bearcats and were down just two at 17-15 with just over seven minutes gone by.
The depth of Baruch proved to be a key asset during the contest, wearing down the Bloodhounds in the latter stages of the first half. The quick play of Baruch quickly transcended into fast points for the Bearcats.
The two point deficit was as close as the Bloodhounds would get the rest of the night. Behind hot shooting, Baruch spurted away and outscored John Jay 33-15 the rest of the first half to go into halftime up 50-30.
Baruch managed to keep a safe distance in the second half. Holding a 56-37 lead early in the final stanza, Baruch used an 11-0 run to take a 67-37 lead with just over 12 minutes to play.
Baruch went on to lead by as much as 38 later in the second half as the Bearcats led 86-48 with 3:09 to play before the contest ended.
The Bearcats held a 63-40 rebounding edge, including 28-13 on the offensive end, resulting in a 26-8 advantage on second chance points.
Baruch held a 23-10 advantage on points off turnovers.
