Box Score New York, N.Y.— The John Jay men's volleyball team earned its first win of the season as the new program was a 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-23) winner over Medgar Evers College in a non contest battle at the Doghouse on Wednesday evening.
The win by the Bloodhounds ups their record to 1-5 overall this season, while Medgar Evers is now 0-7 on the year.
John Jay was led by
Frankie Galang with 12 kills, six service aces, nine digs and three assists. Meanwhile,
Korede Griffith added nine kills and three digs.
Swindon Charles chimed in with nine kills and four digs, while
Dale Hoa had 29 assists and four service aces.
Medgar Evers was led by Jamal Baptiste with 12 kills and seven digs, while Jason Brown added nine kills and 12 digs. Lancedale Calderon had 20 assists for the Cougars.
Medgar Evers led the first set from start to finish. Then in the second set, the Cougars looked well on their way to another win. After jumping out to a 7-0 advantage, the Bloodhounds roared back by outscoring Medgar Evers 15-2 to take a 15-9 lead. The Cougars pulled to within as little as three points of the lead at 18-15, but never closer.
With the sets even at 1-1, John Jay took a12-5 lead in the third set to gain control en route to win. In the fourth set, the teams went back and forth with neither school leading by more than five points. The Cougars led by as much as that with a 16-11 lead before John Jay outscored Medgar Evers 11-3 to take a 22-19 lead before eventually winning.
John Jay registered a .171 attacking percentage, including a .220 percentage in the fourth set. The Cougars hit for a .078 percentage.
John Jay returns to action on Sunday, February 26 for a home contest against Penn State Behrend at 12 p.m.
