Patchogue, N.Y.— The John Jay women's basketball team hung around and hung around, and in the end their resilience paid off, as the Bloodhounds, after never leading in the second half, took the lead in the final minute and held on for a 65-62 road win at St. Joseph's-Long Island on Monday night.
The win was the seventh of the season for the Bloodhounds who are 7-13 overall this season. St. Joseph's-Long Island is now 11-9.
John Jay was led by
Jamecia Forsythe with 21 points and 18 rebounds, while
Danielle Eagan had 15 points, eight rebounds and five assists.
Elizabeth Newton added 11 points and 15 rebounds in the win.
St. Joseph's-Long Island was led by Amanda Bender with 21 points. Christina Cohen added 16 for the Golden Eagles.
It was a close game throughout with neither team leading by more than seven points during the entire contest.
The first half saw nine lead changes and two ties in what was a very tight first half. The first half ended with the score tied at 26.
The Golden Eagles scored the first four points of the second half en route to leading practically the entire second half. John Jay tied the score three times, but never held a lead until the end.
St. Joseph's-Long Island led by as much as seven at several points of the second half.
The Golden Eagles led 58-51 with four and a half minutes remaining. But a 7-1 run by the Bloodhounds made it a one point game with 1:40 to play.
St. Joseph's-Long Island went back up by four and led 62-58 with forty-three seconds left. But a technical foul by the Golden Eagles after a whistle was blown for a personal foul, but the Bloodhounds at the foul line for four free throws. John Jay connected on three of four to cut the deficit to one.
Then after being fouled with twenty-five seconds left, the Golden Eagles missed both free throws to give John Jay possession with the shot clock turned off.
Then with sixteen seconds left,
Tyana Hale connected on a jumper to give the Bloodhounds their first lead of the second half.
After missing a field goal attempt on the other end, the Bloodhounds got the ball back and made two free throws with two seconds left before winning.
