Purchase, N.Y.— The John Jay women's volleyball team opened its season with a 3-1 (29-27, 20-25, 16-25, 19-25) loss at Manhattanville College on Friday evening.
The Bloodhounds, despite the loss, had excellent showings from several key players, including
Martina Hot who led the team with 12 kills, seven service aces and nine digs.
Hakimah Lovell-McFee had a solid performance with eight kills (two errors) on 16 attacks for a .316 attack percentage. Meanwhile, newcomer
Sarah Young had a solid start to her college volleyball career with four kills, three digs and a service ace.
Vanessa Caballero added four service aces and eight digs, while
Katherine Bonilla had 22 assists and a pair of service aces.
John Jay opened the match by winning the first set in gut wrenching fashion. Down 11-9, the Bloodhounds rallied off seven straight points to take a 16-11 lead. The host Valiants hung around and eventually tied the score at 20-20 before both teams traded points the rest of the way. With the score tied at 27-27, Manhattanville committed a pair of attacking errors to give John Jay the win.
The Valiants opened the second set on a 7-1 rally to take a commanding lead of the contest. But the match was far from over. Down seven at 15-8, the Bloodhounds scored eight of the next nine points to tie the match at 16-16. Manhattanville returned the favor and closed out the contest scoring the final nine points to win by nine.
Manhattanville led throughout the contests in the third and fourth sets to take the season opener.
Manhattanville was led by Susy Camaj with 13 kills and seven digs.
