Women's Volleyball Falls in Three to Hunter

NEW YORK, N.Y.— The John Jay women's volleyball team was defeated in three straight by Hunter College as the Bloodhounds lost 25-13, 25-10, 28-26 at the Doghouse on Thursday evening.
 
With the loss, John Jay falls to 1-6 (1-4 CUNYAC), while Hunter College goes to 9-5 (5-1 CUNYAC) this season.
 
The Bloodhounds were led by Martina Hot with nine kills, six digs and three service aces, while Katherine Bonilla had 10 digs and
15 assists.  Sarah Young added four kills. Ashley Diaz added three kills and five digs.
 
Hunter was led by Brianna Eckert with seven kills, six assists and eight service aces, while Taylor Vonasek had seven kills and two service aces.
 
The visiting Hawks took control of the first set early on. With the Bloodhounds leading 3-2, Hunter rallied off four points to lead 6-3 en route to leading the rest of the way. Later Hunter, ahead 9-7, took off by scoring eight of the next nine points to take a 17-8 lead before winning the contest by twelve.
 
In the second set, Hunter raced out with the first 10 points and led 13-1 moments later. John Jay pulled to within as little as 10 when the Bloodhounds trailed 18-8. But from that point, Hunter scored six straight to lead 24-8 before eventually winning 25-10.
 
In the third set, the Bloodhounds got the home crowd rocking. Hunter scored the first four points of the set to lead 4-0. The Hawks led by as much as seven in the set when they led 10-3 and 17-10 later.
 
But John Jay did not go away and came back with a ferocious rally. Behind the servicing of Hot, John Jay scored the next eight points and took an 18-17 lead as well attended crowd exploded in exuberance. A short time later, Hunter took a three point lead and led 21-18. But the Bloodhounds continued to fight and scored five in a row to take a 23-21 lead. Hunter though scored the next three points to take a 24-23 lead. But Sarah Young came up with a kill to tie the score for the sixth time in the set.
 
The two teams were deadlocked at 25-25 and 26-26 before Hunter got out of dodge with the final two points to complete the sweep. The match ended with a service ace by Christina Vitale.
 
John Jay is back in action on Sat. Sept. 29 for a match at Sarah Lawrence College at 3 p.m.
