Women's Basketball Resilient in Win over St. Joseph's-Long Island

NEW YORK, N.Y.— The John Jay women's basketball team got off to a hot start and turned back the challenges of its opponent throughout the contest as the Bloodhounds beat St. Joseph's-Long Island (St. Joseph's) 82-75 in a non-conference affair at the Doghouse Monday evening.
 
The win gets John Jay back to over .500 this season as the Bloodhounds are now 8-7. St. Joseph's falls to 9-6.
 
The Bloodhounds, who never trailed in the contest, got off to a hot shooting start and opened the game with a 19-6 run to lead by that score with just over seven minutes gone by. John Jay made eight of its first 13 field goal attempts, including three three-point field goals by Simone Victor, to set the pace for the high scoring first half.
 
John Jay eventually led by as much as 14 in the first half and led 27-13 with 10:13 remaining.
 
The Bloodhounds maintained a double-digit lead for most of the opening period before the visiting Golden Eagles cut into the deficit in the latter stages of the half.  With the Bloodhounds up 34-21 with 6:06 to play before halftime, St. Joseph's used a 12-4 run to cut the Bloodhound lead to six as John Jay was ahead 40-34 with 1:43 remaining.
 
John Jay answered the call and maintained a cushion after a three point field goal by Danielle Eagan with forty-nine seconds to go before going into halftime ahead by seven at 45-38.
 
John Jay skimmed along to victory in the second half. The Bloodhounds never had a decisive game changing run, but answered the call each time the Golden Eagles threatened.
 
St. Joseph's had gotten the Bloodhound lead down to four with 15:30 to go, before John Jay scored the next four to go back up by eight with 14:48 remaining.
 
John Jay extended its lead to 10 with 12:18 to go after a jumper by Victoria Story to make the score 62-52. But the Golden Eagles came again and cut the deficit back to six and were down 66-60 with 10:23 to go.  The Bloodhounds reestablished a double-digit lead and were ahead 72-62 with 6:13 to play, before St. Joseph's came again via a 9-0 run to slice the John Jay lead to one with 4:06 to play as the Bloodhounds were ahead 72-71.
 
But as they did all game, the Bloodhounds answered and spurted away with a 7-0 run to take a 79-71 lead with 2:08 to go which proved to be more than enough to earn the win.
 
The Bloodhounds were led by Jamecia Forsythe with 20 points and 15 rebounds. She shot 8-for-12 from the field in the win. Story added 19 points and five rebounds, while Victor had 14. Tyana Hale scored 10 for the Bloodhounds.
 
St. Joseph's was led by Amanda Bender with 25 points, nine rebounds and two blocks, while Ashley Larrea had 15 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.
 
John Jay, who committed a season low 13 turnovers, outscored the Golden Eagles 18-8 on points off turnovers.
 
John Jay returns to action on Wed. Jan. 16 for a home contest against the College of Staten Island at 5 p.m.
