Men's Basketball Earns Win over Medgar Evers

NEW YORK, N.Y.— The John Jay men's basketball team picked up a big conference win at home on Tuesday as the Bloodhounds defeated Medgar Evers College 82-70.
 
The win snapped John Jay's two game losing streak and improves the Bloodhounds to 7-4 (4-1 CUNYAC) this year, while Medgar Evers College is now 5-8 (2-3 CUNYAC) this season.
 
The host Cougars got first run on the Bloodhounds, racing out to an 11-2 lead with less than three minutes gone by. The Bloodhounds raced back to keep the game close as Michael Howard came off the bench and connected on three straight three point field goals in the midst of a 9-2 John Jay run to pull the Bloodhounds to within three at 14-11 with four minutes gone by.
 
The Bloodhounds and Cougars battled back and forth from there as the half saw five lead changes and two ties.  John Jay took its first lead of a night at the 8:50 mark of the half on a lay-up by Kris Owens. The lay-up came in the midst of an 8-0 run that saw the Bloodhounds take a 23-20 lead with 8:11 to go after a basket by Kendal Jordan.
 
John Jay led by as much as six later in the first half, but the Cougars countered in the waning moments of the first stanza to tie the score at 38-38 at halftime.
 
John Jay opened the second half on three straight fast break field goals to go back up by six and the Bloodhounds never relinquished the lead.
 
The Cougars got the lead down to one with 17:39 remaining as the Bloodhounds led 44-43. But John Jay raced away with a 12-0 run to take a 13-point lead as the Bloodhounds were up 56-43 with 13:15 to go.
 
John Jay led by as much as 14 later in the half and was up 67-53 with 9:19 to go.  Medgar Evers pulled to within eight on three occasions later in the final period, but never closer as the Bloodhounds held the Cougars at arm's length distance the rest of the way.
 
John Jay was led in scoring by Jamar Harry and Isaiah Holman with 20 points each.  Harry grabbed 11 rebounds and had four steals, while Holman added six rebounds and shot 4-for-8 (50.0 percent) from three point range. Howard added 12 points, while Gary Brady added 11. Korede Griffith had seven points, seven rebounds and five assists in the win.
 
Medgar Evers was led by Michael Taylor with 32 points and six rebounds, while Winston Douglas had 14 points, 18 rebounds and six blocks.
 
John Jay is back in action on Thu. Jan. 10 at Lehman College at 7 p.m.
