Patchogue, NY - The women's basketball team defeated St. Joseph's College of Long Island, 73-68, on Friday evening in Patchogue, NY. The Bloodhounds recorded their first win of the 2013-2014 season and improve to 1-1 overall (0-0 in CUNYAC) while the Golden Eagles fall to 0-4.
John Jay got off to an early 7-3 lead after sophomore
Terri Chu hit a three-pointer three minutes into the contest. St. Joseph's College rallied to cut the Bloodhounds lead to one but John Jay went on an 8-2 run, to go up 16-9.
Later in the half, junior
Aneska Tejada came off the bench and hit a jump shot to give the Bloodhounds their largest lead of the half, 33-19. However, the Golden Eagles responded cutting the lead to three with less than two minutes left in the half. John Jay closed it out with a 5-0 run to give them a 40-32 lead at the half.
Senior
Jamecia Forsythe opened up the second half making a jump shot to increase the lead to 10. Eleven minutes into the second half, the Golden Eagles rallied back to trim the lead to three. Junior
Tyana Hale increased the lead back up to six after completing a three-point play.
The last five minutes featured exciting action as both teams were exchanging baskets. However, the Bloodhounds were able to hold on after junior
Amanda Jimenez and Hale made free-throws to secure a 73-68 win.
Tejada and Forsythe led the Bloodhounds each with a double-double. Tejada had a team-high 19 points, on 8-16 shooting, to go along with 11 rebounds and two assists. Forsythe recorded 12 points, two assists, two steals and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Hale registered 16 points, five rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Jimenez added 11 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore
Tamara Jones picked up 10 boards.
The Golden Eagles were led by Danielle Hamlin, who recorded a game-high 24 points. Laura Cohen recorded a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
John Jay shot 41% from the field, on 25-61 shooting, and the Golden Eagles shot 27%, on 18-67 shooting.
"We were glad to hold on for the win," head coach
Diane Ramirez said. "It's been rough adjusting to the new defensive rules and it has hurt us in both games. Tonight it was especially true on both sides with a total of 60 fouls. In the end though, our team was able to make some big plays offensively to seal the win."
The Bloodhounds return home on Tuesday, November 26, for Homecoming. Pre-game festivities will begin at 5:45 p.m. and tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. The John Jay Athletics Department urge fans to get to the gym early to secure a seat for the "lights out" show.
