In a back-and-forth game, the men's basketball team defeated CCNY, 100-95 in 1 OT, on Homecoming on Tuesday evening at the Doghouse. As a result, the Bloodhounds are back to .500 at 2-2 (1-0 in CUNYAC) and the Beavers are 1-2 (0-1 in CUNYAC).
John Jay opened the game with a steal by junior Darell Robinson, who passed it to sophomore
Kendal Jordan for a layup and the first two points of the game. Junior
Korede Griffith then made a layup to give the Bloodhounds an early 4-0 lead. Twelve minutes into the half, neither team had a lead by more than four.
With CCNY up 25-23, the Beavers went on a 6-1 run to give them a seven point lead. However, John Jay responded as junior
Kris Owens connected on the first of two free-throws. He missed the second one but grabbed his own rebound and put it back up to connect on a three point play. Junior
Jordan Wells then made a layup on a fast break to cut the lead down to three.
The next four minutes saw back-and-forth action as both teams exchanged buckets. Down by 6 with under 3 minutes left in the half, Jordan went 2-for-2 on free throws to cut CCNY's lead to 38-34. CCNY went into half on a 6-2 run to give them a 44-36 lead.
Two minutes into the second half, the Beavers increased their lead to 11. Owens and senior Darrly Dennis responded making baskets for the Bloodhounds to cut the deficit to six. Midway through the second half, CCNY led 60-58 in a close battle.
The Beavers led the next seven minutes until junior
Anthony Saldarriaga passed it to Dennis, who completed the layup to tie the game at 76. Once again, CCNY took the lead scoring the next five points.
With 1:42 remaining on the clock, Wells made a layup and was fouled on the play. He connected on the free-throw, which cut the lead to two. After a missed jumper from CCNY, Wells hit a big three to give John Jay a one-point lead, 82-81.
With 0:33 left, Beavers Che McCoy was fouled and went to the line to shoot two. Fortunately for the Bloodhounds, he went 1-for-2, which forced an overtime period.
Twice in OT, the Beavers had a two point lead only to see it washed away by the Bloodhounds. With 2:12 remaining, Griffith made a lay-up to give the Bloodhounds their first lead in the extra period. Owens then made two key free-throws to put John Jay up by three. John Jay would not look back as they took the conference game, 100-95.
Griffith had a game-high 25 points to go along with four rebounds, three assists and one steal. Wells, Dennis, and Owens recorded 22, 14 and 14 points, respectively. Robinson added five assists and Saldarriaga picked up four steals.
"Tonight was a dogfight," head coach
Otis Fenn said. "It could have gone either way but I am very proud of my guys for fighting the entire game."
The Bloodhounds will head to Baruch College on Friday, December 6, for a conference game at 7:30pm.
