The women's basketball team lost two contests this weekend to St. John Fisher College, 84-50, and Ramapo College, 60-59, at the WoodCliff Hotel and Spa Invitational. The Bloodhounds are now 2-3 on the season.
"We are disappointed with the two losses," head coach
Diane Ramirez said. "However as a coaching staff, we have to pinpoint the areas that need improvement and then give credit where credit is due."
In Game 1 against the Cardinals of St. John Fisher, who stand at 4-2, three Bloodhounds were in double-digits. Senior
Jamecia Forsythe finished with a team-high 11 points, to go along with four rebounds, and one block. Juniors
Tyana Hale and
Amanda Jimenez each had 10 points and Jimenez had a team-high seven rebounds and three steals.
Junior
Aneska Tejada came off the bench and added seven points and four rebounds. Freshman Tiffany Rodriguez registered a game-high two blocks.
The Cardinals were led by Mary Kate Cusack, who had a game-high 19 points. Sydney Bloomstein and Camaryn Buckner both had 11 points.
John Jay shot 40% from the field while St. John Fisher shot 45.1%.
In Game 2 against the Roadrunners of Ramapo College (3-4), the Bloodhounds trailed 30-27 at half. The Roadrunners led much of the second half until Hale made a layup to put John Jay up by one, 46-45, with eight minutes remaining. John Jay increased the lead to four but Ramapo responded by tying the game at 52 with under five minutes left.
The remaining minutes went back-and-forth and with 34 seconds on the clock and the Roadrunners up by two, Forsythe was fouled. She hit both free-throws to tie the game at 59. Ramapo inbounded the ball and with five seconds left, Alayna Donadio was fouled which sent it to her the line. She went 1-for-2 but that was all they needed, as Ramapo won the game, 60-59.
Freshman
Josephine Diaz led the Bloodhounds with a team-high 14 points. Hale and sophomore
Terri Chu each recorded 11 points and junior
Kaitlin Fitzgerald added a team-high three assists and three steals. Forsythe registered a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with eight points.
Micaela Moore of Ramapo finished with a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds. Donadio added 13 points, as well as the game winning free-throw.
The Bloodhounds once again shot 40% from the field and the Roadrunners shot 37.5%.
"I'm extremely proud of our overall defense today," Ramirez added. "We forced turnovers, got a shot clock violation, forced difficult shots, and did not allow much transition. Our offense is still struggling to come together but when it does, we will be a very difficult matchup."
For the weekend, Forsythe recorded 15 rebounds and is now two boards shy of 1,000. She will become the first Bloodhound to achieve this milestone. To add to her accolades, she will be the third player in CUNYAC since 2001, to register 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
The Bloodhounds will head to NYU-Poly on Wednesday, December 4, for a game at 5:00 p.m.
