The men's basketball team defeated Hunter College, 87-83, on Friday evening at the Hunter Sportsplex. The Bloodhounds end their two-game losing streak and improve to 3-4 (2-2 in CUNYAC). With the loss, the Hawks fall to 5-5 (2-2 in CUNYAC) overall.Â
Junior
Korede Griffith recorded the first two points of the game, which was then followed by junior Kris Owen's jumper to give the Bloodhounds an early 4-0 lead. In the first nine minutes of the half, the Hawks tied the game five times. The next three minutes remained even as both teams exchanged buckets. The Hawks eventually took a six-point lead with under five minutes to play but John Jay cut that lead to four heading into halftime.Â
Early on in the second half, Hunter increased the lead back up to seven the Bloodhounds responded. Three minutes into the half, junior Darell Robinson hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 42. Hunter once again took the lead, but only to see the it squander on a free-throw by Owens.Â
With less than 10 minutes left in the contest, the game was tied at 62 apiece. The Hawks then led by three but senior
Darryl Dennis hit a crucial three-pointer to tie the game. However this time, the Bloodhounds would not look back as they ended up leading the rest of the second half. Hunter inched back but the Bloodhounds shut the door on senior
Oshea Alexander and Robinson's successful free-throws.Â
Owens had a team-high 20 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Dennis chipped in with 19 points and a game-high eight steals off the bench. Robinson and Griffith recorded 14 and 13 points, respectively. Alexander registered a game-high two blocks.Â
The Hawks were led by Frankie Drayton as he finished with a game-high 33 points, seven rebounds, four steals, and three assists. Brian Kruger scored 22 points off the bench.Â
The Bloodhounds will return home for their second to last game of 2013 when they host Gwynedd-Mercy College on Sunday, December 15 at 12pm at the Doghouse.Â
