Men's Basketball Can't Hold Onto Second Half Lead To Fall To Gwynedd-Mercy

The men's basketball team lost to Gwynedd-Mercy, 97-77, on Sunday afternoon at the Doghouse. With the loss, the Bloodhounds drop to 3-5 (2-2 in CUNYAC) on the season while the Griffins improve to 6-3. 

In the first half, Gwynedd-Mercy got off to an early 5-1 lead but junior Kris Owens' jumper cut the deficit to two. Junior Darell Robinson's jump shot tied the game at nine with 13:57 remaining in the half. One minute later, the Griffins took the lead, 14-9. The Bloodhounds cut the lead to one and senior Darryl Dennis' two successful free-throws gave John Jay a 17-16 lead. 

The Griffins tied the game on a free-throw and with 9:17 left, Dennis hit two consecutive three-pointers to put the Bloodhounds up by six. Later on, sophomore Carl Ulysse hit back-to-back layups to increase the lead to nine. Heading into halftime, John Jay led 40-30. 

Gwynedd-Mercy began the second half on a 5-0 run but junior Korede Griffith's layup gave the Bloodhounds a 44-35 lead. Four minutes later, the Griffins went on a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to two. Sophomore Kenall Jordan's layup increased the lead to four but with 11:29 left in the contest, Gwynedd-Mercy tied the game at 52. 

With less than eight minutes remaining, the Griffins went on a 8-1 run to put them up by seven. John Jay was able to cut the lead to four but Gwynedd-Mercy held on for the non-conference victory, 87-77.

Griffith finished with a team-high 19 points, two assists, and one steal. Owens recorded 14 points, seven rebounds, one block, and one steal. Dennis had a team-high two steals to go along with 11 points, and five rebounds. Robinson registered 10 points and senior Oshea Alexander had a team-high three blocks. 

Griffins' Arron Goodman finished with a game-high 33 points and eight rebounds. Darnell Artis and Brian Hennessey recorded 11 points each. 

The Bloodhounds will break for finals and return home to the Doghouse on Saturday, December 28, for a game against Yeshiva University at 8:30pm.
