NEW YORK, N.Y – The John Jay men's volleyball lost the first two sets, and came within an eyelash of being swept, before rallying back to win a five set thriller (23-25, 24-26, 26-24, 25-22,15-8) against Lehman College on Thursday evening at the Doghouse.
The win is John Jay's second in a row and first victory in City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) play this season, improving its overall record to 3-7 (1-6 CUNYAC), while Lehman falls to 10-10 (2-7 CUNYAC).
After losing a close one in the first set (25-23), John Jay came out strong in the second set and was ahead by seven at one point with an 18-11 lead. Later in the set, John Jay was one point away from winning it, holding a 24-20 lead. However, the Lightning struck with six straight points to pull out with a 26-24 win to go up 2-0 in the best of five.
In the third set, the Bloodhounds returned the favor, and avoided being swept in the process. John Jay was one point away from losing the set as the Bloodhounds were down 24-21. They roared back with five straight points to take the set 26-24.
The fourth set was a back and forth most of the way before the Bloodhounds took the lead for good when, while trailing 19-18, they scored the next three points to lead 21-19 en route to the three point win.
In the fifth, winner take all, set, John Jay led the whole way en route to completing the comeback.
The Bloodhounds were led by
Jack Palleschi with 12 kills, two block assists and a solo block, while
Oshea Alexander followed with 11 kills (three errors) on 20 attempts for a .400 attack percentage. He added four solo blocks and two block assists.
Korede Griffith had nine kills, six digs and two service aces.
Nicholas Anderson pitched in with 31 assists and nine digs, while
Yevgeniy Remennik had 16 digs, five kills and three aces.
Frankie Galang had 11 digs and six kills.
Lehman College was led by Brian Francisco with 27 kills and 12 digs, while Andrew Morejon had 14 kills, three service aces and seven digs. Luis Colon also added a game high 34 assists.
The Bloodhounds are back in action Saturday March 16 against Cooper Union at 1 p.m. at Simon Baruch Middle School.
