Men's Basketball Holds on to Second Half Lead to Defeat the Brooklyn Bulldogs

The men's basketball team defeated Brooklyn College, 90-78, on Friday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds improve to 6-7 (4-2 in CUNYAC) overall and the Bulldogs fall to 3-9 (1-5 in CUNYAC). 

Junior Kris Owens opened up the scoring hitting a jumper to give the Bloodhounds an early 2-0 lead. John Jay increased the lead to seven after junior Korede Griffith recorded the next five points. Brooklyn cut the deficit to three with 16:42 remaining in the half. 

With 12:44 left, Griffith made a layup and sophomore Carl Ulysse followed with a jumper. Halfway through the first half, the Bloodhounds led 24-16. Four minutes later, the Bulldogs went on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to one. However, Griffith increased it to four on a three-point play and sophomore Kendal Jordan knocked down a layup to put the Bloodhounds up 36-30. Going into the half, John Jay led 42-41. 

On their first drive, Brooklyn took a two-point lead on a three-pointer by Steven Diaz. Ulysse tied it up 20 seconds later on a layup. With 17:09 remaining in the match, Brooklyn led 50-45. 

John Jay tied the game at 55 apiece after Owens nailed down a layup. The Bloodhounds followed on a 12-0, which turned out to be the turning point of the game. John Jay later increased it to 16 on a layup by sophomore Calvin Ingram. The Bloodhounds would end up taking the conference game, 90-78, and improve their conference record to 4-2. 

Griffith finished with a team-high 27 points, on 8-of-13 shooting, to go along with 12 rebounds, four assists, and a game-high five steals. Owens recorded 26 points, on 9-of-14 shooting, five rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Junior Darell Robinson dished out a game-high seven assists and Alexander picked up a game-high eight blocks. Ulysse registered 15 points off the bench and Ingram added eight points. 

Brooklyn's Diaz recorded a team-high 20 points. Jai Kellman registered 16 points and a team-high six assists. Justin Staton picked up a team-high seven boards. 

"Our team came out to play in the second half," head coach Otis Fenn said. "Hopefully, we can extend this win streak next week."

The Bloodhounds will look to do so on Monday, January 13 at 7:00pm when they host the York Cardinals.
