The women's basketball team was defeated by Brooklyn College, 46-43, on Friday evening at the Doghouse. With the loss, the Bloodhounds drop to 4-8 (2-4 in CUNYAC) on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 8-4 (4-2 in CUNYAC) overall.
The first three minutes of the first half remained scoreless until junior
Tyana Hale made a layup to give the Bloodhounds the first two points of the game. The Bulldogs went on a 17-4 run to give them a 13-point lead. Junior
Aneska Tejada hit a jumper to cut the deficit to 19-8.
However, Brooklyn followed on a 7-1 run to increase their lead to 16. Junior
Amanda Jimenez made a layup and the Bulldogs went into halftime leading 27-13.
Sophomore
Amber Villegas hit a jumper to start the second half and sophomore
Terri Chu followed with a three-pointer to cut the lead to nine. John Jay ended up going on a 12-0 run to tie the game, capped off by Hale's three-pointer.
With less than 14 minutes to play, senior
Jamecia Forsythe grabbed a defensive rebound and passed it to Tejada who hit a jumper to give the Bloodhounds a 29-27 lead. Brooklyn quickly tied it and took the lead with 9:56 remaining.
With 4:51 left to go, John Jay took a three-point lead but the Bulldogs tied it two minutes later. The next two minutes would remain scoreless until Hale recorded a jumper to give the Bloodhounds a two-point lead with 0:52 remaining. Five seconds later, Brooklyn's Jaclyn Grasso hit a crucial three-pointer to give the visitors a one-point lead. The Bulldogs would end up taking the conference game by a score of 46-43.
The Bloodhounds were led by Hale, who finished with a game-high 16 points, to go along with seven rebounds, three steals, one block, and a team-high two assists. Forsythe recorded a game-high 17 rebounds and a team-high two blocks. Villegas and Jimenez each recorded five points and junior
Sherrice Marshall added three steals.
Brooklyn's Nicole Francomano had a team-high 14 points, three steals and two assists. T'keyah Francis registered nine points, nine rebounds, and two blocks and Carissa Williams picked up eight rebounds.
"Tonight could have gone either way," head coach
Diane Ramirez said. "I was happy to see the team fight hard to overcome a large lead and we will look to bring that momentum into next week."
The Bloodhounds will return to the Doghouse on Monday, January 13, at 5:00pm for a conference match against York College.
