The women's basketball team defeated York College, 82-69, on Monday evening at the Doghouse. With the win, the Bloodhounds improve to 5-8 overall (3-4 in CUNYAC) while the Cardinals drop to 1-11 (0-5 in CUNYAC).
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 8-2 lead until senior
Jamecia Forsythe closed the gap on a three-point play. With 14:41 remaining in the first half, York led 14-5. Junior
Amanda Jimenez cut the deficit to seven after hitting two free-throws.
York increased its lead to 10 but John Jay recorded six straight points on a three pointer by sophomore
Terri Chu, a layup by sophomore
Amber Villegas and a free-throw by Forsythe. With 2:37 left in the half, junior
Sherrice Marshall tied the game at 27 apiece. Fifty second later, Marshall gave John Jay their first lead after hitting two free-throws. John Jay led 33-30 at the half.
Early on in the second half, the Cardinals cut the deficit to one but the Bloodhounds followed on a 21-0 run to put the game out of reach. With five minutes left to go, York cut the lead to seven but John Jay responded on a 5-0 run. The Bloodhounds would take the conference game, by a score of 82-69.
Forsythe and Jimenez recorded double-doubles for the Bloodhounds. Forsythe had 17 points, a game-high 13 rebounds, five steals, and four blocks and Jimenez registered 14 points, 12 rebounds, three steals, and one block. Junior
Tyana Hale recorded a game-high 18 points. Marshall picked up 10 boards and Chu added nine points.
Cardinals' Angelika Ruggiano recorded a game-high 19 points to go along with three assists and three steals. Nia Rene and Danielle Dunn added 12 points each.
"I was not happy with our performance in the first half," head coach
Diane Ramirez said. "Fortunately, we came out strong to start the second but we need to improve all facets of our game right now."
The Bloodhounds will look to do so on the road on Wednesday, January 15 at the College of Staten Island at 5:30pm.
