Men's Basketball Can't Hold On To First Half Lead Against York College

The men's basketball team was defeated by York College, 80-68, on Monday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds fall to 6-8 (4-3 in CUNYAC) on the season and the Cardinals improve to 8-5 (5-1 in CUNYAC). 

York got off to an early 3-0 lead but sophomore Carl Ulysse and junior Kris Owens hit back-to-back shots to give John Jay a 4-3 lead. York tied the game on a free-throw but the Bloodhounds went on a 6-0 run, capped off by two successful jump shots by Owens. With 13:28 left in the first half, John Jay increased its lead to nine on a layup from junior Korede Griffith

The Cardinals cut the lead to five with under 10 minutes left to go in the half and Owens responded with a jumper. York would tie the game at 19 apiece with 7:27 remaining and would take the lead 20 seconds later. The Cardinals went on a 10-0 run until Owens made a jumper. York went into the half, leading 43-33. 

The Bloodhounds cut the lead to four on a three-pointer and jump shot by Griffith with 17 minutes left on the clock. York increased the lead back up to seven but the Bloodhounds fought back to cut the deficit to four with just under five minutes remaining. However, York went on a 8-0 run to seal the victory for the visitors by a score of 80-68. 

Griffith led the Bloodhounds with 17 points, on 7-for-12 shooting, three assists and a game-high six steals. Korede currently leads Division III in steals per game with 3.58. Owens recorded 16 points, on 8-of-14 shooting, four assists, and three rebounds. Junior Darell Robinson registered 11 points and a game-high nine assists. Senior Oshea Alexander had a team-high two blocks to go along with five rebounds. Freshman Allan Mendlowitz went 3-for-5 from the field to record eight points off the bench. Ulysse was a perfect 3-for-3 from the field and junior Jordan Wells added two steals. 

York's Michael Woods led all scorers with 28 points. Omar St. John recorded 18 points and Jaron Williams picked up nine points, a game high 13 rebounds and five blocks.

"We did not play our game tonight and it hurt us tremendously," head coach Otis Fenn said. "We turned the ball over too many times to win."

The Bloodhounds will head on the road on Wednesday, January 15 to face the College of Staten Island at 7:30pm.
