The men's basketball team trailed by as much as 20 points in the first half and came back to defeat the Baruch Bearcats, 73-66, on Friday night at the Doghouse. With the win, the Bloodhounds are now tied with Baruch at 6-4 in CUNYAC. John Jay improves its overall record to 8-10 while Baruch drops to 10-7.Â
The Bearcats dominated much of the first half as they recorded 18 of the first 20 points of the game. With 11:32 remaining in the half and the Bloodhounds trailing 22-4, junior
Kris Owens nailed a three-pointer. Three minutes later, Baruch increased the lead back up to 20. However, John Jay responded going on a 10-0 run to close the gap to 10.
With just under two minutes left, Baruch led 36-24. Junior
Anthony Saldarriaga and
Kris Owens hit back-to-back three pointers to cut the deficit to six. The Bearcats had the final possession of the half but senior Alexander Oshea stripped the ball away and passed it to freshman
Geno Ware. Ware brought the ball up and passed it to Owens and with seven seconds remaining, he made a jump shot. Heading into the second half, the Bloodhounds made an impressive comeback and trailed 36-32.

Korede Griffith getting fouled on a three-point attempt. He was successful on all three foul shots and the Bloodhounds trailed by one. John Jay took its first lead four minutes into the half as Griffith swiped a steal and went coast-to-coast for a layup.Â
Baruch responded on a 10-0 run to lead 52-43 with 12:20 left to go. Owens then took the game over. He recorded the next 11 points to tie the game on 3 three-pointers and a jump shot.Â
The Bearcats regained the lead two minutes later but the Bloodhounds tied it up at 58 with seven minutes remaining. Griffith made a layup and Owens converted on a three-point play to put the home team up by three. The Bearcats cut the lead to one with 2:34 left in the back-and-forth contest.

Calvin Ingram made a free-throw to increase the lead to four. The Bloodhounds sealed the victory on free-throws and took the conference game by a score of 73-66.
Owens led all scorers with a season-high 34 points to go along with seven rebounds and two steals. Griffith recorded 15 points, seven rebounds, a team-high four assists, and game-high four steals. Sophomore
Kendal Jordan went 4-for-7 from the field, registering 11 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and one block off the bench.
Baruch's Matas Rascius recorded a team-high 15 points and nine rebounds. Granville Gittens added 14 points and Edward Roscigno picked up 11 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
"I am very proud of the team for not giving up despite trailing by 20 in the first half," head coach
Otis Fenn said. "Hopefully the momentum will carry us into the rest of the CUNYAC games."
The Bloodhounds will continue their homestand on Wednesday, January 29 at 7:00pm when they host the Hunter Hawks.
