Men's Basketball Runs Past Medgar Evers 82-56

Junior Kris Owens recorded a game-high 33 points as the Bloodhounds ran past Medgar Evers, 82-56, in Brooklyn on Tuesday night. The Bloodhounds improve to 5-7 (3-2 in CUNYAC) during the 2013-2014 season and the Cougars fall to 1-11 (0-5 in CUNYAC) overall. 

The Bloodhounds took a 5-2 lead early on in the first half after a jump shot by junior Carl Ulysse. Medgar Evers tied the game a few minutes later but John Jay bounced back to take the lead. With the next few minutes seeing lead changes, freshman Allan Mendlowitz tied the game on a three-point play. 

With five minutes left in the first half, Owens converted on three straight jump shots that put the Bloodhounds on a 9-0 run. The Cougars cut the lead to seven, but Owens recorded the next four points. Heading into halftime, John Jay led 30-20. 

In the second half, Anthony Saldarriaga made a layup to put the Bloodhounds up by 11. The Cougars cut the deficit to five but junior Korede Griffith and Saldarriaga made back-to-back buckets. 

Medgar Evers went on a 7-1 run to trail 49-46 with just under 10 minutes left. Owens recorded the next two baskets and Griffiths followed with a jumper. The Bloodhounds would increase the lead and end up taking the conference game, 82-56. 

Owens went 11-for-19 from the field and recorded seven rebounds and two steals. Griffith registered 10 points, seven rebounds (five offensive), and a game-high five assists. Senior Oshea Alexander picked up a game-high 12 rebounds and seven blocks. Junior Darell Robinson had six assists, four steals, and four rebounds. Saldarriaga dished out a game-high eight assists to go along with six points and three steals off the bench. 

Khalid Yousef led the Cougars with a team-high 23 points and four steals. Pablo Segura recorded 18 points and two steals. 

"Owens has been shooting the ball well of late," head coach Otis Fenn said. "I was happy with all facets of our game tonight."

The Bloodhounds will return to the Upper West Side for a conference match against Brooklyn College on Friday, January 10 at 7:00pm.
