Carlson's Two Goals Leads Men's Soccer Past Medgar Evers

Bloodhounds record season-high 5 goals

The men's soccer team defeated Medgar Evers College, 5-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Randall's Island. With the win, the Bloodhounds improve to 5-8 on the season and 4-1 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Cougars drop to 4-6 overall and 2-4 in CUNYAC.

The Bloodhounds got the scoring started early when senior Graysen Carlson blasted a shot in the seventh minute to give John Jay an early 1-0 lead. The Cougars responded thirteen minutes later to tie the game at one apiece. With the Bloodhounds intensifying the pressure, Carlson was tripped in the box to give John Jay a penalty shot. Junior Justin Osorio was awarded the free-kick and connected to give the Bloodhounds a 2-1 lead.

Senior goalkeeper Vitecha Kochaon made some key saves to keep the lead at halftime. John Jay outshot the Cougars 11-7 and Kochaon recorded five saves.

In the second half, the Bloodhounds controlled most of the play. In the 63rd minute, Carlson scored his second goal of the match, and eighth of the season, to increase the lead to two. With four minutes left to play in the contest, junior Anthony Norena scored to record his first goal of the season. Two minutes later, senior Yotam Bloom connected on a shot inside the box to give the Bloodhounds their season-high fifth goal of the game.

Carlson finished with two goals and three shots. Senior Korede Griffith dished out two assists. Senior Pablo Rojas and sophomore Thomas Malloy picked up the other assists for John Jay. Senior Christian Munoz registered eight shots and seven shots on goal. Kochaon finished the contest making nine saves. He has now allowed one goal or less in five straight games.

The Bloodhounds will face the College of Staten Island on Monday, October 13, at 4pm at Randall's Island Field 83. The Dolphins are currently second in the conference so the winner of this match will most likely have the number one seed heading into the conference playoffs.
