The women's basketball team could not find a way to hold on to a late lead against Lehman College and fell, 68-66, on Tuesday evening in the Bronx. The Bloodhounds drop to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Lightning improve to 2-2 on the season and 1-0 in the CUNYAC.
The Bloodhounds were led by junior Briana Cunningham and sophomore
Josephine Diaz. Cunningham recorded her second double-double of the season with 21 points, on 8-for-14 shooting, 12 rebounds, and one block. Diaz registered a game-high 23 points to go along with five rebounds, four assists, and one steal. Senior
Amanda Jimenez picked up 14 rebounds, including five offensively, and junior
Terri Chu added 11 points. Junior
Amber Villegas finished with a game-high seven assists and freshman
Victoria Royal had six rebounds.
The Lightning got off to an early 9-0 lead after recording the first nine points of the game. However, three-pointers by Diaz and Chu cut the lead to 9-6. With ten minutes remaining in the half, the Bloodhounds trailed 19-16. Three minutes later, Lehman increased the lead back up to nine. John Jay was able to chip away at the lead and at halftime, the Lightning led 34-32.
To start the second half, Chu hit a jumper to tie the game for the first time. A few minutes later, John Jay trailed by four but two successful free-throws by Jimenez and a three-pointer by Chu gave the Bloodhounds their first lead of the night.
The next six minutes saw eight lead changes with both teams exchanging baskets. With the Lightning leading 56-55, Cunningham made a lay-up to put the Bloodhounds back up by one. John Jay's largest lead came with 1:43 remaining when Cunningham made a free-throw to give the Bloodhounds a 64-62 advantage.
Lehman tied the game in their next possession and regained the lead with 11 seconds left. John Jay was unable to fire a last minute shot and fell by a final score of 68-66.
The Bloodhounds will return to the Doghouse on Saturday, December 6, when they host the Brooklyn Bulldogs at 2pm.
