The men's basketball team lost to the College of Staten Island, 95-90, on Thursday night at the Doghouse. The Bloodhounds fall to 2-7 on the season and 1-3 in the CUNY Athletic Conference. The Dolphins improve to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in CUNYAC.
Sophomore
Jesse Higgins came off the bench for the Bloodhounds and recorded a season-high 20 points, on 7-of-9 shooting, and three assists. Tuesday's hero,
Darell Robinson, registered a team-high 21 points, team-high six assists, and five rebounds. Senior
Korede Griffith finished with 19 points, on 8-of-14 shooting, six rebounds, and four steals. Junior
Kendal Jordan and senior
Anthony Saldarriaga had a combined nine rebounds and six steals. Sophomore
Ronald Merriwether recorded seven points off the bench.
Senior
Korede Griffith opened up the game with a lay-up to give the Bloodhounds an early 2-0 lead. Four minutes into the game and John Jay up by one, Higgins converted on a three-point play to give the Bloodhounds an 11-7 lead. One minute later, CSI tied the game but a jumper by Saldarriaga put John Jay back up on top.
The Bloodhounds' largest lead of the half came at 11:13 when Merriwether drilled a three-pointer. Halfway through the first half, the Dolphins tied it and eventually took the lead. With the scored tied at 26 apiece with 6:09 left to go, CSI went on a 5-1 run. Robinson hit a lay-up with just under one minute left in the half to give the Dolphins a 41-39 lead heading into the half.
Two minutes into the second half, CSI increased their lead to four but a jumper by senior
Kevin Crosby cut the deficit to two. The Dolphins then broke open the game on a 10-0 run to give them a 53-41 lead.
With 11:50 left in the contest, freshman
Gabriel Torikashvili hit a jumper to cut the lead to six. Four minutes later, the Dolphins increased the lead back up to 12. The Bloodhounds made a late comeback courtesy of a jumper by Robinson and a three by Higgins, but John Jay would eventually fall 90-85.
The Bloodhounds close out the 2014 schedule on December 27th and 28th when they travel to Montclair, NJ for the Team Hill Holiday Classic. They then open the 2015 schedule with a home game against Hunter College on January 2nd.
